Substitute Jovic heads leveller as Slovenia rue missed chances

Serbia substitute Luka Jovic headed a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Zan Karnicnik's opener and salvage a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in an entertaining Euro 2024 Group B match in Ljubljana on Sunday.

Slovenia, who earned a point in their opening match with a 1-1 draw against Denmark, looked set to claim all three points after Karnicnik fired them ahead in the 28th minute.

But Serbia, who lost 1-0 to England in their opener, refused to give up and Jovic's 94th-minute header earned them a share of the spoils.

The result leaves both teams on four points after two matches, two points behind leaders England. Slovenia face England in their final group game on Wednesday, while Serbia take on Denmark.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Slovenia, who had the better chances throughout the match. Karnicnik had a great chance to double their lead early in the second half, but he fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Serbia also had their chances, with Dusan Tadic hitting the post in the first half. But they left it until the last minute to snatch a point, with Jovic's header proving to be the crucial moment.

It was a deserved point for Serbia, who showed great character to come from behind and earn a share of the spoils. They will now be confident of reaching the knockout stages, while Slovenia's hopes of progressing are hanging in the balance.
